Schedule of Controlled Substances
The drugs and drug products that come under the jurisdiction of the Controlled Substances Act are divided into five schdules. Some examples in each are outlined below. For a complete listing of all of the controlled substances , consult the Controlled Substances Act or any Office of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Examples of the drugs in these Schedules are:
Schedule I Substances - The substances in this schedule are those that have no accepted medical use in the United States and have a high abuse potential:
- Heroin
- LSD
- Peyote
- Psilocybin
- tilidine
- dihydromorphine
- methaqualone
- fenethylline
- aceylmethadol
- Marijuana
- MDMA
- Mescaline
- N-ethylamphetamine
Schedule II Substances - The substances in this schedule have a high abuse postential with severe psychic or physical dependence liability. Schedule II controlled substances consist of certain narcotic, stimulant and depressant drugs.

- phenmetrazine (Preludin)
- pentobarbital
- sufentanil
- dronabinol
- Morphine
- methadone
- oxycodone (Percodan)
- amphetamine (Dexedrine)
- methylphenidate (Ritalin)
- secobarbital
- etorphine hydrochloride
- nabilone
- Codeine
- meperidine (Demerol)
- oxymorphone (Numorphan)
- methamphetamine (Desoxyn)
- amobarbital
- fentanyl (Sublimaze)
- phenylacetone
Schedule III Substances - The substances in this schedule have an abuse potential less than those in Schedules I and II, and include compounds containing limited quantities of certain narcotic drugs and non-narcotic drugs such as:
- Tylenol with Codeine
- benphetamine
- phendimetrazine
- secobarbital compounds
- derivatives of barbituric acid
- chlorphentermine
- paregoric
- pentobarbital compounds
- nalorphine
- clortermine
- amobarbital compounds
Schedule IV Substances - The substances in this schedule have an abuse potential less than those listed in Schedule III and include such drugs as:
- barbital
- chloral hydrate
- meprobamate (Equanil, Miltown)
- fenfluramine
- chlordiazepoxide (Librium)
- chlorazepate (Tranxene)
- prazepam (Verstran)
- temazepam (Restoril)
- midazolam (Versed)
- detropropoxyphene (Darvon)
- phenobarbital
- ethclorovynol (Placidyl)
- paraldehyde
- diethylpropion
- diazepam (Valium)
- flurazepam (Dalmane)
- alprazolam (Xanax)
- triazolam (Halcion)
- Quazepam (Dormalin)
- pentazocine (Talwin-NX)
- methylphenobarbital
- ethinamate (Valmid)
- methohexital
- phentermine
- oxazepam (Serax)
- clonazepam (Clonapin)
- halazepam (Paxipam)
- lorazepam (Ativan)
- mebutamate
Schedule V Substances - The substances in this schedule have an abuse potential less than those listed in Schedule IV and consist primarily of preparations containing limited quantities of certain narcotic and stimulant drugs generally for antitussive, antidiarrheal and analgesic purposes. Some examples are buprenorphine and propylhexedrine.
