Campus Water
Like any other resident of Fullerton, the campus receives
its water from the City of Fullerton. When it reaches campus,
it is split into two basic systems: One is the drinking water
system, which is water supplied to the drinking fountains
and bathroom faucets (and food service areas in the TSU).
The other system is called the "industrial water system,"
which is basically the same water except that it is
separated from the drinking water by a check valve.
These valves prevent any "backflow" from the
laboratory faucets
that could potentially contaminate the water. For
this reason, you should only drink water (or prepare coffee
or prepare food) with water from drinking fountains or bathroom
faucets.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT throw any old coffee into the
drinking fountains or bathroom sinks. Those few coffee grounds
accumulate and cause major clogs in the drain system. Please
toss old liquid coffee into the toilet and all coffee grounds
into the regular trash.
In your laboratory areas, you may want to review the following
chart to assess the type of water that you need. The campus
also has a deionized water system. This is water that comes
to campus then is run through special resin columns to remove
ions, such as calcium and magnesium (things that are present
in all hard water). To achieve purer water, you will need
to run the deionized water through another system, such as
a reverse osmosis or distilled system. In any case,
this water is still considered "industrial" and
should not be used for drinking.
